Settlement Agreements

We regularly act for both employers and employees in the drafting and negotiation of settlement agreements (previously known as compromise agreements).  Under a settlement agreement, an employee will typically be asked to settle any claims that they may have against their employer in return for a lump sum cash payment (and perhaps a few other sweeteners besides).

Helping employers

If you are an employer who wishes to offer one of your employees a settlement agreement, we can advise you on the benefits and pit-falls of this approach.  We can also advise you on the right financial offer to make and the terms that should be attached.

Helping employees

If you are an employee who has been offered a settlement agreement, you will need to take independent legal advice on the terms and effect of that agreement.  We can provide this advice.

We regularly provide independent legal advice to employees, senior executives and directors throughout Sussex and Surrey.  We can advise you at our offices in Crawley. Alternatively, if your employers are issuing a large number of settlement agreements, we can travel to your employer’s premises anywhere in Sussex and Surrey in order to provide independent legal advice to a number of employees at the same time.

In these sorts of situations, we understand that you are likely to be concerned about the cost of taking legal advice.  However, your settlement agreement will normally include a promise from your employer that they will make a contribution towards the legal fees that you incur.  As a result, you may not have to pay us a penny for the help that we provide.
